Looking After Your Garments

One of the household chores that we tend to perform more than others is laundry. This has been made a considerably easier job than for our previous generations thanks to the invention of washing machines. In the olden days people had to wash their clothes by hand and did so using quite rudimentary practices; this was because in the days before electricity had been discovered there were no machines that could help ease the job. Most people would fill a small tin bath or other suitable vessel with water and work the fabric by hand using soap flakes to help remove dirt and stains. It was an extremely laborious task that was loathed by many. After the invention of electricity it became easier due to the invention of machines to help carry out the work and clean the clothes more effectively; although they don’t look anything like the washing machines we are used to seeing today.

Many people dislike taking care of their laundry because they have had a bad experience with spoiling an entire load of clothes due to colours running or some other type of disaster. Your clothes can be kept looking like new for longer and last for a considerable amount of time of you follow the proper garment care instructions that are indicated on each item of clothing. By separating clothes in to groups according to whether they are of a light or dark material it will help to ensure that you do not experience colour running in future washes.

Other inventions for laundry

Many people also have a tumble dryer to help deal with their laundry needs. These can be especially useful if you live somewhere, such as an apartment, where you do not have access to be able to hang your clothes to dry outdoors. It is possible to dry your clothes in front of radiators but this can be inconvenient if you do not wish to have the heating on and can take longer for the clothes to dry through sufficiently. Some people do not have tumble dryers because they are fortunate enough to have outside space and prefer to wait for warmer weather so they can have their clothes dry freshly outdoors. There are sheets that you can include place in the machine when you are drying your clothes that makes you clothes smell nice and replicate the fresh smell that they gain when they dry outdoors.

Some items can only be properly cared for by being dry cleaned and will be ruined if you try to wash them in a machine at home; this is particularly common with silk items and other delicate fabrics that can easily damage.

Virtual Reality Meets the Construction Industry

Virtual Reality may be a reasonably new concept when it comes to computer games and related technology, but in other areas it's been around for hundreds, if not thousands of years. One of those areas is building construction, where simulated materials are used more often than you think.

To give you a few examples, consider Sutton Place in Surrey or the gateway of London's Syon Park. King Henry VIII's brewer used faux stone and brick all over Sutton Place, while Syon Park's gateway contains artificial stone manufactured in the 1700s.

In America, George Washington's home at Mount Vernon is a classic example of virtual reality in home construction. What appear to be stone blocks making up the exterior of the home are actually pine blocks that have covered with a paint and sand mixture to give the appearance of natural stone.

Today, faux materials include both wood and stone products, used most extensively in flooring and exterior paving. Amtico is one name in simulated flooring that's been around for more than 40 years. They have mastered the art of manufacturing vinyl flooring that so closely resembles natural materials, even experts have a difficult time recognizing it once the floor is installed.

Of course, there are engineered wood products that use plywood and laminate to give the look and feel of natural wood. But since the products are made almost entirely out of real wood, they aren't in the same league as Amtico's vinyl flooring.

Various types of slate, marble, and other stones are all the rage for interior flooring and counter tops. The problem is, natural stone is extremely expensive. With poured concrete and the right dyes, you can simulate an expensive marble floor or granite kitchen counter at a fraction of the cost.

On the outside, concrete stone products are being used to create chimneys, façades, and patios. Poured concrete is treated with rubber stamps and coloured dyes to produce the look of real stone or brick on walkways. Even the fountains and pools that look like they've been imported from Italy probably aren't real.

We are living in a world where we've learned how to simulate natural products with such great detail; it's becoming hard to discern the real from the fake. On the one hand, the subsequent loss of natural materials in our surroundings could be a bad thing. On the other hand, the benefits of reduced cost and greater durability that are associated with simulated materials is a good thing.

One way or the other, simulated materials are here to stay in the construction industry. Next time you're visiting a friend who has just remodelled, you might be walking on an Amtico floor. Would you dare ask?

Tips for Choosing Wardrobes

If you are currently considering purchasing wardrobes you might be wondering about where to start. There is just so much choice these days. The good news about having a lot of options is that it can increase your chances of finding something suitable; the downside though is that checking out all your options can be very time consuming. Here are a few tips for choosing wardrobes; hopefully this will make things easier.

  • If you already have a design theme in your bedroom then you might want to stick with this. If you put in a wardrobe then this can make a huge difference to the overall look of things. This means that you need to be careful or you could end up with something that looks a bit odd. Thinks about the design theme of your room and decide if you want to stick with the current look or try something new. This should make it easier to decide the type of wardrobes to look for; thus narrowing down your search.

  • It can be really helpful to write down all the things you like and don’t like about your current wardrobe; sometimes knowing what we don’t want is just as important as knowing what we do want.

  • If you have a style that you like such as contemporary, rustic, or traditional then just limit your search to this type.

  • If you are stuck for ideas about the type of wardrobes you want then you will find something like Google images is a great resource. Just go to this search engine and type in the words ‘wardrobes’ and limit this search to images. You will get many examples and you will almost certainly find something suitable.

  • You will also find the biggest selection of wardrobes for sale online as these sellers are not limited by space in the same way the traditional furniture shop is limited.

  • It is also worth pointing out that these days the best deals for wardrobes are to be found online. This is because there is a lot of competition and this forces prices down; it should also be noted that these sellers have far fewer overheads and this means that they can sell items really cheaply.

  • If you want to save a bit of money then you can purchase second hand wardrobes. Some of these will be great value and still in good condition. If you want to really get a good bargain then you could buy a worn wardrobe and do this up yourself. This is not only a good way to save cash but you also get the rewarding feeling of restoring something to its former glory.
